Support College Outreach Programs: Obama and Biden support outreach programs like GEAR UP, TRIO and Upward Bound to encourage more young people from low-income families to consider and prepare for college.
With the support of our current administration, California GEAR UP is fully engaged in the fourth year of a six year grant cycle, 2005-2011. Primary services for 2008-09 are to: identify and provide school based services for new cohort of schools across California; support 17 GEAR UP schools from Cohort A (2005-08) in a sustainability model project; select and award student recipients for Educational Trust Awards; and provide whole school support and direct student services (10th grade class) at Valley High School.

Continuing Sustainability Project (CSP) training workshops were offered to CSP schools in Northern California and Southern California in February.

Pamela Goode, Assistant Director, Division of Curriculum and Instructional Services, Los Angeles County Office of Education, reviewed the many professional development documents and curriculum on the Taking Center Stage ACT—Act II (TCSII) website: http://pubs.ced.ca.gov/TCSII

Mary Sirody, Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP) Director, UCLA Mathematics Department, described the free MDTP tests which math teachers can use to identify topics and skills that need more attention in courses, including Prealgebra and Algebra Readiness. California GEAR UP Wins IBM Grant - iTraduceloAhora! (Translate Now!) |
|
Winter 2009 16th Edition
|
|
In December 2008, California GEAR UP was awarded the IBM iTraduceloAhora! (Translate Now!) automatic translation grant. This program uses an enhanced version of IBM WebSphere Translation Server Software to translate web sites and e-mails automatically from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. GEAR UP will use this grant at GEAR UP middle schools to broaden access to English content on the World Wide Web for Hispanics from various ethnic backgrounds and to enhance communication between school staff and families.
California GEAR UP Regional Coordinator Don Mar led the effort to secure the grant. The IBM translation software, administrative support, evaluation and training represent a $20,000 contribution for each GEAR UP school invited to participate. The project timeline is from December 2008 to December 2009. For more information, contact the California GEAR UP Project Coordinator, Karla Lagunas at

New Schools Begin the GEAR UP Journey |
|
Winter 2009 16th Edition
|
California GEAR UP Selects 54 Middle Schools for Planning PhaseCalifornia GEAR UP works with middle schools to develop a sustainable college-going culture through the adults that have the greatest impact on student life and experience: the principals, teachers, counselors, families and community leaders. The emphasis of this effort is whole school change, built upon a self-assessment model with professional development support to integrate best practices towards closing the achievement gap.
Planning Phase orientations at the various school sites began in December, continuing through February 2009. The principal and school Leadership Team members meet with the Regional Coordinator and the School-Based Services Manager to determine what programs are currently in place to support the school vision. GEAR UP staff provide an overview of program resources and activities that are available to the school: facilitation for the Leadership Team, website training, Counseling Institutes, and a Principals Institute are offered by GEAR UP. An initial School Survey must also be completed and is due in February 2009.
After the six-month Planning Phase is completed by June 1, 2009, 45 schools will be selected for the two-year intensive program beginning July 2009 through September 2011. READ MORE TO VIEW THE LIST OF SCHOOLS
