“If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll probably have trouble getting there.”

That is the basic premise for the California GEAR UP Counseling Institute to be held throughout the state in the coming months.

As middle school and high school counselors help students to chart their path to college, it is essential that they have current information about the process.
One-day sessions are scheduled from February through April and will promote academic planning for all students and families.  2006-2008 GEAR UP schools and those involved in the Continuing Schools project are encouraged to send staff.  All middle schools are welcome to attend.

Institute topics include: Paths to College, Middle School Issues vs. High School Issues, Creating a College-Going Culture, the Role of the Middle School Counselor, Motivating Activities, Programming Issues, Comparison of District Graduation Requirements vs. A-G Requirements, How to Motivate Students to Ready Themselves for A-G Available Resources, Internet Sites and College: Making It Happen material.

Sessions are facilitated by Susan Bonoff, an active educator for 35 years including 17 years teaching and counseling at the middle school level and 18 years counseling at the high school level.  She served as a college counselor for nine years and then became a director of a local GEAR UP partnership.  Susan has taught aspiring college counselors through graduate programs at California State University at Northridge and the University of California at Los Angeles.

For registration details visit the GEAR UP website at www.castategearup.org.  The institute is offered at no cost to participants.

“Ms. Shelley Davis,

I just wanted to take a moment and tell you how much I enjoyed the Counseling Institute last week. Over the years I’ve been fortunate to attend a number of conferences and seminars. I could think of only one other day so well spent. As you stated at the outset, Susan was (is) simply the best. The insights gained that day will be put to good use. GEAR UP is a tremendous program and I hope to have the chance to work in a greater capacity with such an outstanding project. Once again, thanks so much.”

Alex Bacos, Counselor - Madison Middle School, Los Angeles Unified School District
