Principals to Share Best Practices
The Principals’ Institute will focus on sharing best leadership practices for and by middle school principals.  As instructional leaders, principals are responsible for identifying high quality professional development opportunities for their teaching staff; ensuring resources are available to support school staff, students and families, and, creating a culture of learning, to build strong teams.  Principals from the 2006-08 cohort of GEAR UP schools will work collegially and share lessons learned about schools and students, with all the opportunities and challenges they represent.

The Principals’ Institute will be held on June 22, 2006 in Oakland.

GOVERNOR HOSTS PRESS CONFERENCE AT JACKMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL
On Thursday, January 26, 2006, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Vice Admiral Richard H. Carmona, the U.S. Surgeon General, visited Samuel Jackman Middle School to announce a combined federal and state effort to combat juvenile obesity and to showcase the governor’s proposals to improve physical education and nutritional standards in California’s public schools.

Children’s consumption of sugary, high caloric soft drinks and snack foods is believed to be one reason why nearly a third of American children are overweight or obese, according to some studies. Obesity has been linked to a number of health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.

Counseling Institute

“If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll probably have trouble getting there.”

That is the basic premise for the California GEAR UP Counseling Institute to be held throughout the state in the coming months.

As middle school and high school counselors help students to chart their path to college, it is essential that they have current information about the process.
One-day sessions are scheduled from February through April and will promote academic planning for all students and families.  2006-2008 GEAR UP schools and those involved in the Continuing Schools project are encouraged to send staff.  All middle schools are welcome to attend.

“What I really like about GEAR UP is that this is not another program—this is doing better what we already do.  It is good teaching...and that includes assessment, analysis and academic support.”
