New Schools Begin the GEAR UP Journey

Winter 2009 | | April 19, 2009 at 12:23 pm

California GEAR UP works with middle schools to develop a sustainable college-going culture through the adults that have the greatest impact on student life and experience: the principals, teachers, counselors, families and community leaders. The emphasis of this effort is whole school change, built upon a self-assessment model with professional development support to integrate best practices towards closing the achievement gap.

Planning Phase orientations at the various school sites began in December, continuing through February 2009. The principal and school Leadership Team members meet with the Regional Coordinator and the School-Based Services Manager to determine what programs are currently in place to support the school vision. GEAR UP staff provide an overview of program resources and activities that are available to the school: facilitation for the Leadership Team, website training, Counseling Institutes, and a Principals Institute are offered by GEAR UP. An initial School Survey must also be completed and is due in February 2009.

After the six-month Planning Phase is completed by June 1, 2009, 45 schools will be selected for the two-year intensive program beginning July 2009 through September 2011.
